Scorrochano Lab is riding high on scientific momentum! September has been an exhilarating month, and we are bursting with pride: our laboratory was recognized with a prestigious award at the 20th Biennial Congress of the Spanish Society of Neuroscience (SENC) held in sunny Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Our scientific poster exploring early lipid alterations in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) captivated the neurobiology community, securing an official conference award!
💡 Key Takeaways
- Best Poster Award: Scorrochano Lab honored at the national SENC Congress for outstanding research quality.
- Early Lipid Alterations in ALS: Demonstrating that spinal cord lipid and sphingolipid imbalances precede overt clinical motor symptoms.
- Translational Potential: Providing clear rationales for early metabolic biomarkers and lipid-targeted therapeutics.
Decoding Spinal Cord Lipids in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
ALS is characterized by the fatal loss of voluntary motor neurons. Traditional therapeutic development has centered heavily on preventing late-stage neurodegeneration. Our poster presented a paradigm-shifting alternative: targeting the earliest metabolic perturbations in lipid homeostasis.
Lipids are not passive energy stores. In the central nervous system, they form the structural scaffold of neuronal membranes, regulate synaptic receptor clustering, and compose the protective myelin wrapping around axons.
Our team evaluated spinal cord tissue in the established SOD1G93A murine model. Our findings revealed marked abnormalities in cholesterol biosynthesis and sphingolipid turnover at very early presymptomatic stages. This indicates that lipid dysfunction is not just collateral damage from dying motor neurons, but an active participant in early pathogenesis. Intervening at this level could dramatically change disease trajectories.
Scientific Recognition and Future Impact
Receiving an award at SENC provides immense validation:
– National Peer Recognition: Competing against hundreds of exceptional studies from across Spain and international institutions highlights the originality and rigor of our laboratory.
– Biomarker Pipeline: The distinct lipid profiles identified can serve as candidate early biomarkers in CSF or blood, enabling earlier intervention windows.
– Boosting Young Scientific Careers: Presenting, defending, and winning at major conferences accelerates our junior investigators’ development and international visibility.
The Energy of Teamwork
Behind every conference poster stand countless months of rigorous replicate experiments, statistical analysis, and graphic design. This award belongs to the entire Scorrochano Lab team! We return to Madrid energized and eager to push our findings to the next level.
