Neuroscience with a Pint! Silvia Corrochano Illuminates Brain Nutrition at Pint of Science

Science heads to the pub, and Scorrochano Lab is right at the epicenter! We are immensely proud to announce that our principal investigator, Dr. Silvia Corrochano, was one of the featured keynote speakers at Pint of Science Spain, held in Madrid. Breaking down academic barriers to share knowledge with the public, Silvia took the stage to answer a vital question: What does our brain really need to eat to function at its peak?

Collaborating with the British Embassy and hosted at the iconic Círculo de Bellas Artes (La Pecera) in Madrid, the evening proved to be an unforgettable celebration of accessible, engaging, and passionate science!

💡 Key Takeaways

  • Silvia Corrochano at Pint of Science: Leading scientific outreach in an informal, engaging environment in Madrid.
  • Brain Nutrition & Cognition: Exploring how macro- and micro-nutrients modulate neurotransmission, neuroinflammation, and mental clarity.
  • Bridging Science and Society: Bringing laboratory breakthroughs directly to the public in partnership with the British Embassy.

“Brain, What Do You Need to Eat Today?”: The Science of Nutritional Neurobiology

The human brain represents just 2% of our total body weight, yet it consumes over 20% of our daily caloric energy. But feeding the brain is not simply about raw calories—it is about providing the precise molecular building blocks required for complex neural computation.

In her talk, titled “BRAIN, WHAT DO YOU NEED TO EAT TODAY?”, Dr. Corrochano demystified the biochemical dialogue connecting our diet to cognitive health:
– Neurotransmitters from the Plate: Amino acids and vitamins derived from food act as immediate precursors for dopamine, serotonin, and GABA.
– Lipids & Brain Cell Membranes: Omega-3 fatty acids and specific sterols build healthy synaptic membranes, shielding neurons against oxidative stress and premature aging.
– The Gut-Brain Axis: Microbial metabolites from gut fermentation influence neuroinflammation, mood, and long-term neuroprotection.

Silvia explained why “brain fog” occurs after poor dietary choices and demonstrated how evidence-based nutritional habits can preserve cognitive longevity.

Why Science Outreach is Integral to Scorrochano Lab

Public outreach is not an optional extracurricular activity for our team; it is an essential civic duty:
– Demystifying Biomedicine: Translating complex molecular biology into clear, relatable concepts empowers citizens to make informed health choices.
– Inspiring Future Vocations: Demonstrating that scientists are passionate, accessible communicators encourages students to consider careers in STEM.
– Accountability to Society: Sharing the impact of publicly and privately funded biomedical research directly with the communities we serve.

Raising a Glass to Science!

A packed room, spirited debates, and plenty of laughs made this Pint of Science edition an absolute triumph. Thank you to everyone who joined us, to the organizers, and to the British Embassy for making it possible. Cheers to brain health!
